Born in Havana, Cuba, Yosvanii was drawn to music at a young age. At just seven years old, he began his lifelong love affair with the violin. Now living in Toronto, Yosvanii is the musical embodiment of the city’s diversity. Most loved for his unique ability to freestyle the classical sound of his violin over pop, house, and hip-hop beats, Yosvanii’s talent extends to countless musical genres.
“When I was four years old, standing in my parent’s tiny living room in our Havana home, I remember turning my attention to the TV where a violinist was playing a concerto with an orchestra. I can’t recall the exact song or the precise note. I don’t think I even knew that the instrument he was playing was a violin. What I can tell you, and what I remember is that at that moment—that brief moment—hearing the delicate sound of the bow striking the string, I was mesmerized. I fell in love.
My parents and my family often tell me about the beginnings of my love for music. As a toddler I was always singing and that by the age of three, I had this special ability to memorize all of the lyrics to any song. My mother told me that because of this, my daycare chose me to sing songs in front of the classroom. My mother knew that music was alive inside of me, deep inside of my heart.”
